Bonbon was first released in December of 2015 through Nesër's Youtube and quickly become a favourite racking up +30 million views. The video might have played a big part in getting Era noticed. It saw Istrefi showing off her killer dance moves on an idyllic snow-covered road in Brezovica, Kosovo wrapped up in a green parka jacket with bright pink fur (swoon) and makeup on fleek. After the viral success of the video, Era was noticed by music execs and signed to <b>Sony Music </b>and <b>Ultra Music</b>.</span></div>

You know, limping down a grungy, deserted Newtown street at 2am, bathed in the orange glow of scattered streetlights, with your t-shirt slung around your neck, clutching an inflatable dolphin and a wad of fake dollar bills as you follow a group of girls clad in inflatable angel wings while dragging along a giant cut out of Dillon Francis’ head to a parking lot two blocks away, nothing but tired laughter and an indistinguishable drum ‘n bass song echoing in the distance to accompany you, could very well be the only logical conclusion to what was the very first Mad Decent Block Party in South Africa.</div>

The entire journey from first seeing Diplo posting his Mad Decent Block Party plans for South Africa on Reddit, to eventually getting my “Twerker” wristband put on my arm at the gate, was one of stifled excitement and anxiety. Diplo’s Instagram posts of his attempts at drifting in the Cape Flats and Dillon Francis’ hilarious reactions to our lack of Pepsi in South Africa in the days before the event, only served to bring home the fact that Mad Decent Block Party was indeed happening in our backyard. Something that has garnered “legendary” status on YouTube comment threads and the odd braai conversation, Mad Decent Block Party has held up its reputation for being an all-inclusive, community oriented festival experience for left-field electronic music fans. Rapidly expanding from a single city festival, to a nationwide tour in the US, Mad Decent’s undeniably fun formula proved successful, with the next logical step being to export this unique package to the rest of the world in 2014.</div>

Paul Devro had the dance floor alight with his wonderfully curated Hip Hop set as the crowds began filing in. Das Kapital, a sure bet to get any crowd hyped up, delivered a strong, high energy set that could very well stand toe to toe with any of the other headlining sets on the night. Matching the adrenaline pumping soundtrack, was the outrageous visuals that were plastered all over the LED screens, with Dragonball Z, Power Rangers and Looney Tunes forming a somewhat unexpected throwback to 90s upbringing, nostalgic images from our childhood being paired with the sounds of today.</div>

By the time our very own masked wonder, Sibot, assisted by Toyota on visuals, concluded his set, the entire venue was perfectly primed for the onslaught that was Flosstradamus. The Chicagoan duo brought their EDM/Trap crossover sound and brought it hard, playing everything from crowd favourites, Pillz and Roll Up, to Westcoast rap classics both old and new, ranging from Snoop and Dre’s The Next Episode to Kendrick Lamar’s Maad City, with their set peaking at the eruption of a monstrously chaotic mosh pit from which I’m still recovering.</div>

With the crowd in full-on rage mode, Dillon Francis delivered a very aesthetically different set that in many ways only Dillon could pull off, everything from Blur’s Song 2, his collaboration with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Without You to Gesaffelstein with calls from Josh from Flosstradamus (stepping in as impromptu MC during Dillon’s set) for a house party as Dillon slipped in R Kelly’s iconic, family get-together anthem, Ignition. It was a set that burst with colour and tongue-in-cheek personality, complemented wonderfully with the various kaleidoscopes of iPhone emoji as his visual backdrop.</div>

It was a rather refreshing divergence from the often mass-produced event food in the region of boerewors rolls and bland burgers.</div>

The entirety of Mary Fitzgerald Square was decked out in Mad Decent Block Party banners and branding, also adding a distinct and rather genius South African feel in using beer crates as chairs in the food stall area.</div>

What followed next was without a doubt, the best live performance I’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing. Major Lazer’s performance was the perfect balance between dizzying energy levels, crowd participation and sheer absurdity. There were giant hamster balls, Major Lazer branded dollar bills falling from the sky, confetti, smoke machines and a point in the show where they had managed to get a crowd of thousands to remove their shirts and throw them into the night sky. Their unique mix of dancehall and big room electro only eclipsed by their onstage dancers, Lafayette Bless and Mela Murder who completely stole the show. They twerked while doing handstands, while crowdsurfing and even rode a blow up kiddie raft over two male crowd members laid out over the stage, which was met by gasps  from the crowd. I don’t think I’ve needed a squirt from a water gun more in my life.</div>

We were treated to a number of Major Lazer hits, including Bubble Butt, Jah No Partial, Get Free and most surprisingly a local ringtone favourite straight from 2006, Township Funk by DJ Mujava.</div>

Added to the various crowd activities, everyone was given whistles which added a sense of being a part of the music, rather than just being an observer. The atmosphere bordered on something inclusive and communal with a shot of whatever it is Miley is taking these days. There were twerking girls in beanies grinding off each other, Kendrick Lamar fans moving to dancehall and Skrillex, introverted stoners in pyjama pants passing around a half-limp, inflatable sex doll in the crowd and even a wheelchair-bound fan getting to crowdsurf.</div>

Known internationally as a curator amongst the worldʼs most cutting edge DJs, producers, and musical movements Wesley Pentz (better known as DIPLO) has experienced a variety of successes. The last few years have been spent running through the club circuit and having chart-topping hits with refreshing irreverence. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1978, Pentz spent most his childhood in Florida working in his father’s bait shop and being turned onto music through then-new mediums like MTV. Drifting North through the state came Miami Bass, and from the West came the sounds of Southern Hip-Hop artists. The musical influence and variety coalesced, and at 18, Pentz moved to Philadelphia for college at Temple University to study Film and Music. While a student he took a job in the South Philadephia community as a social worker and created the influential Hollertronix club night, which was the beginning of his fledgling career as DIPLO.</div>

In 2004, Pentz realesed his debut album as Diplo called, “Florida.” It received praise and accolades in the underground community. The music embodied on this album led to an introduction via an A&R man at XL Records to M.I.A. In 2004, he partnered with M.I.A. for the mixtape “Piracy Funds Terrorism.” Pentzʼs cultural impact had started to snowball. Together they worked on her first album “Arular” and much of her second “Kala,” including the 2008 mega-hit “Paper Planes,” which reached No. 3 in the U.S. Charts and earned him a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. His production credits have evolved since to include Santigold, Lilʼ Jon and Missy Elliot, while remixing works by Beck, Radiohead, Britney Spears and countless others. In 2009 Pentz teamed with frequent collaborator Dave Taylor (aka Switch) to release the futuristic dancehall album “Guns Donʼt Kill People… Lazers Do,” under the guise of Major Laze — a Jamaican militant at war with an evil army of zombies, mummies, and vampires.</div>

Meanwhile, his record label Mad Decent has helped to introduce Brazilian baile funk, Angolan Kuduro, and other marginalized music to clubs around the world, developing as a trendsetting force with which to be reckoned. With the same mission in mind, some of the varied acts Pentz has signed or produced include Rye Rye, Bonde do Role, Crookers, Blaqstarr, Boy 8-Bit, Buraka Som Systema, and Rusko, allowing Mad Decent to act as a launching pad or home base for many others while spreading its influence across the globe. Through the label, Pentz has founded a charity called Heaps Decent as a social relief program to help children in Australia as well as with additional efforts internationally. In early 2009, Pentz debuted his film “Favela on Blast,” a five-years-in-the-making documentary exploring the Brazilian slum favelas of Rio de Janeiro and the thriving baile funk music scene that exists within. He is currently developing a TV show to air in 2010.</div>

Francis first rose to fame after gaining the respect of American producer Diplo and eventually collaborating on the song "Que Que". His song "Masta Blasta", originally a 130 BPM house track, was edited after inspiration from Dutch musician Munchi and eventually ended up as the moombahton track that brought him to fame. With the help of a mysterious shadow government called Cinco he was cryogenically frozen as a safeguard for the future’s wellbeing. Despite a great many years of pursuing peace on the planet, a new threat began to loom on the horizon and the commando was brought out of sleep by the Committee of Five. This intergalactic group faced an opponent that only Major Lazer could defend against: his former superior and commander General Rubbish. Rubbish had come out of deep space hiding with a new weapon…Terror Lazor and was set out to enslave and capture all of Earth’s allies to seize inter-galactic planetary control and then destroy Earth. With dwindling resources to defend Earth and it’s allies, the Committee of Five brought Major Lazer out of cryogenic slumber. He was assigned a partner, the female assassin known only as Knife Fight. Together they set out to FREE THE UNIVERSE, beginning on the fortuitous date of February 19th, 2013.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">After releasing their landmark LP Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do in 2009, the heroic production duo of Diplo and Switch found themselves boldly marching forwards toward the end of the aughts, conquering major milestones. From 2009 to 2011, the twosome toured extensively across the United States and the world, selling out shows and performing at some of music’s major festivals, including Coachella, Pitchfork, Sasquatch, Outside Lands and Falls Music & Arts Festival. In 2010 Major Lazer released Lazerproof, a free download mixtape with pop sensation La Roux, and Lazers Never Die, an EP featuring two new tracks and three remixes, including one by Thom Yorke. Undoubtedly, one of the foremost breakthroughs for Major Lazer during this time was the production collaboration with Beyonce on her massive hit “Run the World (Girls)”, which sampled their track “Pon de Floor. Beyonce directly sought out Switch and Diplo, recognizing the fact that the duo was creating authentically innovative music and further cementing their status as a production team worthy of worldwide mainstream attention. As 2011 turned to 2012, Switch determined it best to pursue his own path, leaving Diplo in full control of Major Lazer.</span></div>

As Major Lazer, he recently retreated to Jamaica to team up with producers Ariel Rechtshaid and Dre Skull on the upcoming Snoop Dogg album Snoop Lion “Reincarnated”. This is a cool place to start. The answer isn’t really straightforward – I put them up at a time when I really wasn’t coping with how demanding my lifestyle was becoming.</div>

As I worked through it and found a better routine, I didn’t have a need for them, but I like leaving them there as a reminder to keep working the way I am.</div>

<b>2.     We know you are from Cape Town - we are from JHB. As a Capetonian what’s the one thing you love about JHB and what’s the one thing you hate about JHB?</b></div>

I love the fact that the party scene tends to feel a bit more open-ended in Johannesburg. You get a lot of people into very different things in the same places, which means you can really “explore” your music collection.</div>

The thing I don’t like, at times, is that some of the staple party venues have really self-entitled dickheads frequenting it. I don’t need to stand behind a woman arguing that she deserves more white wine in her already full glass, when she’s paying R16 for it. Get over yourself and go enjoy your night, miss.</div>

<b>3.     Tell us who is Das Kapital? What inspired the name and how did you end up in music specifically electronic music?</b></div>

“Das Kapital” is Kyle Brinkmann for a part of every day. The name came about when I was 17, reading a lot of political, economic and philosophical texts. It’s Karl Marx’s book, first published in 1861, criticising the construct of capitalism in Western society.</div>
<div style="text-indent: 0px;">

<div style="text-indent: 0px;">
There’s a ton of irony in using the name of that book - heralded as the origins of modern communism – as the pseudonym for a music project, but I liked it for a ton of reasons, so stuck with it.</div>

I started producing music to have tracks to rap over (I started writing lyrics when I was 12 and 13), and as I got deeper into the production side, it became the thing that I put all my time into. Because I started on my old home PC, the music was always electronic, and as I improved and upgraded, incorporating evermore live sound into my tracks, the electronic roots have stayed true.</div>

<b>4.     DJing is very different from producing. Which came first for you, and how did you get your big break?</b></div>

Production came first, by a long shot. I started DJing about 4 or 5 years after I started writing tracks. I got my first club set at Fiction during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, having played a lot of house parties in the years before. It really just spiraled from there – Good people heard my sets, liked what they heard and pushed my name further, and with that, I grew as a performer and artist.</div>

<b>5.     For your age you have achieved a lot how does this make you feel do you ever get overwhelmed by it? I mean, having a track featured in international movie release "21 Jump Street" trailer, and on American TV shows is something most can only dream about.</b></div>

If anything, I’m aware of my age because of how much more I want to get done.</div>

I look at a lot of my achievements as things to smile at, but the moment you become satisfied or overly self-congratulatory is, to me, the moment you become inert; tame – If you don’t see the need to better your work and constantly surpass yourself, you’ll stop moving forward.</div>

<b>6.     If you could pick any place in Cape Town to describe your music, what place would you pick and why?</b></div>

Brilliant question, and really tough to answer. I guess I’d say somewhere overlooking the sea, really high up, in winter, at night. There are a lot of emotions that could play out there across the spectrum, so I think that’s perfect. That’s where a lot of the inspiration comes from at least. Thanks to everyone that’s supported the music, the label, our artists and the movement we are building. This is a team effort, and I’ll rep my team to the death of me.</div>

<b>7.     When producing where do you draw your inspirations from are there any producers you turn to for advice?</b></div>

I listen to a lot of music, with very little regard for genre specificity. I take cues from outlying genres and what I FEEL needs to be written, and combine them.</div>

It’s always an adventure, but I go in with at least one idea or movement that needs to happen, and let the rest of the parts fall into place.</div>

I am excited for one reason – I am playing an awesome party with a lineup of stupidly talented people (both local and international). It’s not often that I’m so sure of both my place in a lineup and the place of those around me.</div>

I’m really looking forward to sharing the stage with old friends and new friends alike – they’re all veritable artists in their own right.</div>

<b>9.     Major Lazer (Diplo), Dillion Francis and Flosstradamus make for a pretty sick lineup. Who are you looking forward to seeing, and which one of them do you look up to?</b></div>

All of them have been influential to me for years. Flosstradamus used to rep the Chicago footwork sound hard, and recently really came to represent the face of “Trap” music, which is closely linked to my musical roots in Hip Hop production.</div>

Dillon Francis has been a fantastic producer for years, whether it be his Dubstep, his Electro or his 112BPM stuff. I’m really excited to meet him, because he’s a character, and I love when that comes across in someone’s music. As for Major Lazer, I’m really looking forward to meeting Jillionaire, seeing the whole show, and playing alongside Diplo again. It’s a no brainer.</div>

<b>10.  This year you started your own record label. In your opinion, what sets your label apart from other record labels out there?</b></div>

Do Work is really multifaceted, and that makes it hard to pin down. I think that’s what makes it work – We do a lot with our music, in terms of targetting tracks to places where they need to be heard, and pushing the talent of our artists forward.</div>

We get really hands-on with the tracks we sign, working with the artists directly to push their tracks and their abilities to levels higher than even we expect sometimes. Stylistically, all that we care about is “great”. We have everything from Techno, to New Wave Hip Hop (I think I just made that up but it’s a real thing), to Electro and Progressive and Deep House, to whatever works. We care about music that means something to someone, and pushing that further.</div>

90s Hardcore is making a massive comeback right now. I’m looking forward to seeing how it’s going to be integrated and reinterpreted by producers. Otherwise, there are a lot of sounds drowning the sonic landscape right now, and I’d very much rather let those drain away than become bigger. I want to see growth, and I know a lot of my contemporaries want to as well. Here’s hoping NEW is direction we all head.</div>
