While the past years, decades even, were dominated primarily by the Frankfurt and Berlin schools of Techno, constantly setting the tone and pace for progression of a rather hard-edged style of dance music, the Hanseatic City is increasingly coming into its own. The newest and literally one of the youngest representatives of this blossoming yet adamant Hamburg-bred club music goes by the name of ETИIK. Born in 1992, this prodigious 21-year-old is already being coined the wunderkind of new German Techno. What‟s more, it took him just one gig in Hamburg‟s Baalsaal to get himself a record deal. “It was quite overwhelming,” ETИIK recounts. “My initial plan was to not venture into DJ‟ing before having established myself with a few tracks of my own to show. Though at the time I was familiar with the Baalsaal‟s manager and he invited me to DJ one night. It was actually my first official DJ set. That night an A&R Manager from Warner happened to be among the guests. He saw me, heard me and thought to himself: „Whatever else it is this guy does, we need him!‟ A mere two weeks later I was seated at a table with the folks from Warner and we discovered that we have the same vision and idea of who I am and where I want to go with my music.” And so he signed on with bitclap!, Warner Music‟s Dance label.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">A rapid rise to fame? Overnight stardom? Far from it. Despite his young age ETИIK‟s signature sound has been a long time in the making. “When I was seven, I remember hearing Sven Väth‟s „Dein Schweiss‟ for the first time and being stricken. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to do something just like that.” For years he worked on developing his extremely characteristic sound. “I want each of my tracks to boast a strong identity, while also strongly differing from one another. The danger in looking to form a signature sound is that, at the end of the day, many of the productions will sound pretty much the same. I strive to avoid this at all costs.” So it came that ETИIK spent most of his days as a young teenager sitting in his room, refining sounds, beats and dynamics. “My friends and classmates were all listening to Hip-Hop and R‟n‟B. This made me and my inclination towards everything electronic a perpetual outsider,” he remembers. “At the same time I am a big fan of percussion. And so from time to time I catch myself including Hip-Hop-based drum patterns in my Techno.” All that at an age, when others are busy flipping through the latest Harry Potter novel.</span></div>

It‟s his uncompromising and surprisingly confident sound, backed by a sense of style that is spot-on. ETИIK, which is his real name by the way, grew up in Hamburg as the son of Albanian immigrants, who supported his musical ventures from day one. His aim, from the outset, was to pair Techno with rare elegance. Instead of overloading his music with sounds, ETИIK prefers to omit all that is superfluous and to focus only on the essentials. His music cuts to the chase and shows poise, where most others succumb to irritating effects: Shaken, not stirred! “I‟m an absolute perfectionist, constantly seeking the optimum,” he explains. “It doesn‟t take me long to have 80% of a track complete. The other 20% however can take me months. I may even choose to place an already finished track back in the archive because I suddenly dislike the way the Hi-Hat sounds.” As a result it took ETИIK an entire two years of working on his first tracks before he liked them well enough to upload them to Soundcloud. His efforts have paid off, with his Soundcloud channel currently counting more than 330,000 plays of his uploaded tracks and remixes.</span></div>

Everything needs to be in the right place to form a unity, bearing within itself a clearly defined character.” His music is inspired by contemporary artists such as Boys Noize, Tiga, D.I.M and Kraftwerk as well as by old-time greats the likes of Johann Sebastian Bach. So encountering a few bars of a violin solo somewhere in his sounds wouldn‟t be that big a coincidence. Or possibly more vocals in the near future: “I really enjoy vocals. They are excellent to play around with. I‟ve already set my sights on a couple of possible collaborations for my future tracks, and it‟s looking good.”</span></div>

All of the latter enhanced by a healthy dose of “crackle” and homemade Sawtooth synth sounds, bestowing upon his relentless tracks a certain analog fragility and thus a soul. But above all, ETИIK‟s trademark are his badass drops, catching you unaware and knocking you off your feet. Leading us to his philosophy: “In your face, but in style, please!”</span></div>

People just loved his sound, one of them being SCNTST from Boys Noize Records. Meanwhile SCNTST and ETИIK are friends and have released music together on the in-house record label „Boysnoize Records‟. “That is all part of the larger plan,” ETИIK explains, “not to settle with one label, one direction, one business deal. I like how contacts and opportunities grow naturally and I want to put all these chances to use.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">ETИIK‟s increasing popularity as a producer is mirrored in his undeniable talent as a DJ, where he equally values extensive build-ups and clearly nuanced scripts. Just playing one track after the other is not his thing. Instead “it may come down to me playing a 90-minute-set with 50 or even 60 different tracks mixed and delivered to the people. And, what‟s most important, with no loss in tension.” With all that said, ETИIK simply considers himself an entertainer with a coherent master plan. A young man, highly recognizable in sound and appearance, he produces a style of Techno quoting the genre‟s history and bringing it up to date so skillfully that many of the quotes used only become apparent after repeated listening. The five tracks featuring on ETИIK‟s upcoming EP “Neon Daze”, to be released on November 19th in Germany via bitclap! / Warner Music, lay further emphasis on his range and caliber as a producer. “Neon Daze”, the title track, is a massive stomper with elaborate beats, an agonizingly intense bassline and skillfully sprinkled vocal samples. “Nixon”, as yet, is possibly one of the meanest marching versions of Future-Tech-Funk around. “Vault” is a brilliantly unfriendly tune to be played in the spanking early morning hours, right as the temperature in the club is about to hit the ceiling. “La Nuit” masterfully plays with distorted melodies and disturbing background noises, while “Boaws” concludes the EP, taking it back to the intricate Electro sounds of the 90‟s with spheric keys and zero gravity. Five tracks, five drafts and one clear purpose: Right on the mark, full speed ahead, but always in style.</span></div>

In 2012 he was invited on a big tour of Australia, while also supporting deadmau5 on his tour of Germany, playing in front of a thousand plus people each night. Yet, the following experience proved to be even more momentous: “One day, friends told me that Skrillex had posted a remix of mine on his Facebook fanpage. He then followed me on Twitter and let me know that he liked my productions, which led to us communicating regularly up until today.” And now his upcoming EP “Neon Daze” will be released in the USA via the Skrillex-owned label OWSLA. As a young Techno producer with a clear vision and big goals, these days it is hard to imagine a bigger honor or accolade one might even say. But ETИIK is far from done. “Neon Daze” will be accompanied by a music video directed by Anto Hinh-Thai. The same director that previously realized Gesaffelstein‟s “Viol”. And with another international tour in the making for 2014, well, let‟s just say this young man is only getting started.</span></div>

From acts like Bart B More, Fool, HAEZER, Tai, The Upbeats, TC, Trumpdisco, Pelussje, QG and more. We have had great producers from all over the world performing at our festival to 3000 people they know have a true passion for their music. </span></div>

You know, limping down a grungy, deserted Newtown street at 2am, bathed in the orange glow of scattered streetlights, with your t-shirt slung around your neck, clutching an inflatable dolphin and a wad of fake dollar bills as you follow a group of girls clad in inflatable angel wings while dragging along a giant cut out of Dillon Francis’ head to a parking lot two blocks away, nothing but tired laughter and an indistinguishable drum ‘n bass song echoing in the distance to accompany you, could very well be the only logical conclusion to what was the very first Mad Decent Block Party in South Africa.</div>

The entire journey from first seeing Diplo posting his Mad Decent Block Party plans for South Africa on Reddit, to eventually getting my “Twerker” wristband put on my arm at the gate, was one of stifled excitement and anxiety. Diplo’s Instagram posts of his attempts at drifting in the Cape Flats and Dillon Francis’ hilarious reactions to our lack of Pepsi in South Africa in the days before the event, only served to bring home the fact that Mad Decent Block Party was indeed happening in our backyard. Something that has garnered “legendary” status on YouTube comment threads and the odd braai conversation, Mad Decent Block Party has held up its reputation for being an all-inclusive, community oriented festival experience for left-field electronic music fans. Rapidly expanding from a single city festival, to a nationwide tour in the US, Mad Decent’s undeniably fun formula proved successful, with the next logical step being to export this unique package to the rest of the world in 2014.</div>

Paul Devro had the dance floor alight with his wonderfully curated Hip Hop set as the crowds began filing in. Das Kapital, a sure bet to get any crowd hyped up, delivered a strong, high energy set that could very well stand toe to toe with any of the other headlining sets on the night. Matching the adrenaline pumping soundtrack, was the outrageous visuals that were plastered all over the LED screens, with Dragonball Z, Power Rangers and Looney Tunes forming a somewhat unexpected throwback to 90s upbringing, nostalgic images from our childhood being paired with the sounds of today.</div>

By the time our very own masked wonder, Sibot, assisted by Toyota on visuals, concluded his set, the entire venue was perfectly primed for the onslaught that was Flosstradamus. The Chicagoan duo brought their EDM/Trap crossover sound and brought it hard, playing everything from crowd favourites, Pillz and Roll Up, to Westcoast rap classics both old and new, ranging from Snoop and Dre’s The Next Episode to Kendrick Lamar’s Maad City, with their set peaking at the eruption of a monstrously chaotic mosh pit from which I’m still recovering.</div>

With the crowd in full-on rage mode, Dillon Francis delivered a very aesthetically different set that in many ways only Dillon could pull off, everything from Blur’s Song 2, his collaboration with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Without You to Gesaffelstein with calls from Josh from Flosstradamus (stepping in as impromptu MC during Dillon’s set) for a house party as Dillon slipped in R Kelly’s iconic, family get-together anthem, Ignition. It was a set that burst with colour and tongue-in-cheek personality, complemented wonderfully with the various kaleidoscopes of iPhone emoji as his visual backdrop.</div>

It was a rather refreshing divergence from the often mass-produced event food in the region of boerewors rolls and bland burgers.</div>

The entirety of Mary Fitzgerald Square was decked out in Mad Decent Block Party banners and branding, also adding a distinct and rather genius South African feel in using beer crates as chairs in the food stall area.</div>

Whether it was one too many tequila shots or pure hallucination, I could’ve sworn I saw Die Antwoord’s Ninja lurking around in a pair of inflatable angel wings, as well as JR and AKA.</div>

What followed next was without a doubt, the best live performance I’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing. Major Lazer’s performance was the perfect balance between dizzying energy levels, crowd participation and sheer absurdity. There were giant hamster balls, Major Lazer branded dollar bills falling from the sky, confetti, smoke machines and a point in the show where they had managed to get a crowd of thousands to remove their shirts and throw them into the night sky. Their unique mix of dancehall and big room electro only eclipsed by their onstage dancers, Lafayette Bless and Mela Murder who completely stole the show. They twerked while doing handstands, while crowdsurfing and even rode a blow up kiddie raft over two male crowd members laid out over the stage, which was met by gasps  from the crowd. I don’t think I’ve needed a squirt from a water gun more in my life.</div>

We were treated to a number of Major Lazer hits, including Bubble Butt, Jah No Partial, Get Free and most surprisingly a local ringtone favourite straight from 2006, Township Funk by DJ Mujava.</div>

Added to the various crowd activities, everyone was given whistles which added a sense of being a part of the music, rather than just being an observer. The atmosphere bordered on something inclusive and communal with a shot of whatever it is Miley is taking these days. There were twerking girls in beanies grinding off each other, Kendrick Lamar fans moving to dancehall and Skrillex, introverted stoners in pyjama pants passing around a half-limp, inflatable sex doll in the crowd and even a wheelchair-bound fan getting to crowdsurf.</div>

With the help of a mysterious shadow government called Cinco he was cryogenically frozen as a safeguard for the future’s wellbeing. Despite a great many years of pursuing peace on the planet, a new threat began to loom on the horizon and the commando was brought out of sleep by the Committee of Five. This intergalactic group faced an opponent that only Major Lazer could defend against: his former superior and commander General Rubbish. Rubbish had come out of deep space hiding with a new weapon…Terror Lazor and was set out to enslave and capture all of Earth’s allies to seize inter-galactic planetary control and then destroy Earth. With dwindling resources to defend Earth and it’s allies, the Committee of Five brought Major Lazer out of cryogenic slumber. He was assigned a partner, the female assassin known only as Knife Fight. Together they set out to FREE THE UNIVERSE, beginning on the fortuitous date of February 19th, 2013.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">After releasing their landmark LP Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do in 2009, the heroic production duo of Diplo and Switch found themselves boldly marching forwards toward the end of the aughts, conquering major milestones. From 2009 to 2011, the twosome toured extensively across the United States and the world, selling out shows and performing at some of music’s major festivals, including Coachella, Pitchfork, Sasquatch, Outside Lands and Falls Music & Arts Festival. In 2010 Major Lazer released Lazerproof, a free download mixtape with pop sensation La Roux, and Lazers Never Die, an EP featuring two new tracks and three remixes, including one by Thom Yorke. Undoubtedly, one of the foremost breakthroughs for Major Lazer during this time was the production collaboration with Beyonce on her massive hit “Run the World (Girls)”, which sampled their track “Pon de Floor. Beyonce directly sought out Switch and Diplo, recognizing the fact that the duo was creating authentically innovative music and further cementing their status as a production team worthy of worldwide mainstream attention. As 2011 turned to 2012, Switch determined it best to pursue his own path, leaving Diplo in full control of Major Lazer.</span></div>

The recording includes exciting collaborations with Bruno Mars, Tyga, Flux Pavillion, Wynter Gordon, Shaggy, Wyclef, Ezra Koening from Vampire Weekend, Dev and more. Spin called the LP’s first single “Get Free” featuring Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors, “a meeting point between Jamaica, West Africa, and Brooklyn.” The second single from Free The Universe, “Jah No Partial”, dropped on October, 22nd 2012.</span></div>

He is the Grammy-nominated founder, owner and head honcho of Mad Decent records, which has not only garnered widespread critical and audience accolades since its inception, but has also deservedly earned a hefty reputation as a vanguard of groundbreaking releases. As Major Lazer, he recently retreated to Jamaica to team up with producers Ariel Rechtshaid and Dre Skull on the upcoming Snoop Dogg album Snoop Lion “Reincarnated”. Major Lazer was also featured on the title track from No Doubt’s latest comeback album with famed dancehall artist Busy Signal and released an official remix for Hot Chip’s “Look At Where We Are”.</span><br />
