<span style="font-family: inherit;">Newcomer Loyiso Madinga killed it at The Savanna Newcomer Showcase in May, so it’s hardly a surprise that the industry voted him tops in his category. Conrad Koch’s infamous puppet Chester Missing was honoured for the art of the written word in The Times Comic’s Pen Award category – and as one of the country’s most prolific writers, we salute him.  Mark Banks was acknowledged as the Lifetime Achiever for his contribution to SA’s comedy landscape as a genuinely interesting, alternative comic with over 25 years in the industry. Elton Mduduzi Ntuli garnered the most votes in The Savanna Audience Choice Award category, which is the only award open to public vote; and Cape Town’s Kagiso KG Mokgadi topped the breakthrough category.  But perhaps the most prestigious award that a comic can win is the one voted for by the full industry as SA’s best comedian; The Comic’s Choice Comic of the Year Award, so congratulations to Loyiso Gola, one of our most gifted, hardworking and talented entertainers.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Of course, as is always the case with comedy, controversial content’s thrown in for good measure, this time in the format of Riaad Moosa appearing as Shrien Dewani in a rap collaboration with Nik Rabinowitz.  Breaking into song with Duran Duran’s ‘Notorious’ (as ‘Pistorious’), it sure was one a moment the audience won’t forget any time soon.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">The event format is simple – none of this boring speech-giving nonsense you find at so many dull industry do’s.  There are only six recipients, so between the sidesplitting sketches performed by the cast members above, the coveted Waldo statuettes will be presented to the lucky nominee who got the most votes.  Each recipient does seven minutes of stand-up as their thank-you speech, which makes for an entertaining evening of off-the-cuff comedy and perfectly rehearsed theatre.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">“In stand-up you either kill or you die”, stated Kagiso Lediga to the brimming audience of comedy enthusiasts who turned out in their masses to support SA’s newest comedy talent at the Savanna Newcomer Showcase on 6 May.  Now in its second year, this year’s installment saw 36 up-and-coming comics each get five minutes on stage at the Soweto Theatre before being buzzed off by the event’s outstanding MC, Kagiso Lediga.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">As well as friends and family of the cast and stand-up fans, the audience was made up of over fifty of SA’s top comedians such as Alyn Adams, Celeste Ntuli, Jason Goliath, Ndumiso Lindi and Eureka Nkese.  They’d all been invited to see the newcomers in action so that they could cast an informed vote in the ‘Savanna Newcomer Award’ category at The 4th Annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA), which takes place in August.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">The newcomers were flown in by Savanna from all over the country and delivered the performance of their lives!  Loyiso Madinga (a 2013 nominee) had the audience howling with tears of laughter with his rendition of a Sotho/English song, whereas first time entrant Stuart Cairns killed it with his Takalani Sesame reenactment and Zulu football commentating.  The audience was treated to rapping, one-liners, storytelling and strummed guitar liedjies about sunburn, but it was the comedy in vernac that raised the roof and had fans springing to their feet for standing ovations.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lots of entrants means a really long show, but MC Kagiso (affectionately known in the industry as Kags but as “The Savanna Guy” by the public) knew just when to amp the crowd and keep the vibe alive.  Of course there were one or two newbies that bombed, but in a room full of comedians that was almost as funny as the guys who were great, especially with Kags spurring them on.<u></u><u></u></span></div>

attended the 3<sup>rd</sup> <b>The Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards™</b> held
at the Teatro in Monte Casino on Saturday 24 August 2013. Comics, Celebs and a
ton of media graced the yellow carpet as they gathered to honour only the
hottest and most happening comedic talent around. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Awards is an opportunity for every professional comedian in the country to
register and vote for his or her favourite registered comedian in each
category. There are no committees, panels or governing bodies, the votes are
simply counted, and the results made known. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

“Art of funny” meant to embody the fact that comedy as a freedom of expression
is in fact an art. This year’s theme, “The Art Of Funny” centered on
self-expression and social justice, so whilst audiences laughed at the
collaborative sketches, there was an underlying message of how comedians, much
like graffiti artists and free-runners have the ability to reshape reality,
drive a revolution and change the world.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

surrounded the yellow carpet to capture shots of the stars of the night. Now
you wouldn’t think comedians had it in them but they all looked fabulous
dressed to the nines in formal attire. We got to admit we were quite impressed
by the few that arrived in theme “The art of funny “and<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>self expression (laughs) dress check pics

graphic MC Chris (insert pic) with no eyes were short and sweet and totally enjoyable.
All the entertainment was </span>centered<span style="font-family: inherit;"> around the “Art of Funny” theme and included a
mind blowing performance by some parkour free runners,</span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">really adorable mime artists, the sweetest
little old lady dancers influenced by modern dancers shaking down to Pussy Cat
Dolls, a funny banter between a black and white rhino and </span>of course<span style="font-family: inherit;"> comedians
including Skhumbuza, Magnus Magnuson and Chris Forest. Each award was presented
by a well-known celebrity or comedian which includes the likes of Anele Mdoda who
is looking absolutely fabulous at the moment, Joe Mafela and </span></span><span lang="EN-ZA" style="color: #222222; font-family: "inherit","serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-ZA;">Jahmil Qubeka.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
