A STATE OF TRANCE CLASSICS, VOL. 9

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a world full of mainstream pop, you may have come from a place where all dance music was simply called 'techno' -- no one seemed to understand the art form, and no one seemed to care. Perhaps in a previous time, you weren't even a lover of music, because what you were hearing on the radio simply didn't do anything for you…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For many of us, we can distinctly recall a moment where our ears were opened — where we first discovered that music could be so much more than what it had been. For millions of people, artists like Armin van Buuren, BT, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond, and Chicane opened the door to a world of sound that had never existed. Great songs will always remain great songs, but what about that first time you put on headphones and learned that sound design and synthesizers could make an experience far more visceral and poignant than any acoustic instrument?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The songs on this album were chosen by ASOT listeners from around the world. Armin van Buuren asked his 20 million strong listener base, coming from over 74 countries, to send suggestions for their favorite classics of all time. From this list, this album was born!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 'A State of Trance' Classics series is a chance to remember just how life-changing the art form has been and will continue to be. Volume 9 contains four discs worth of groundbreaking content, spanning the most influential years of trance music. Remember that trance isn't a genre, it's a way of looking at music and life!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: 700;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As we hit the midway point of 2014, the Fisherman & Hawkins freight train begins to gather
momentum. After a steady start to the year with their <span style="font-weight: 700;">'Codebreaker' </span>collaboration alongside British
duo Solis & Sean Truby which was instantly followed up with their octane fuelled début at <span style="font-weight: 700;">ASOT
650 </span>Jaarbeurs Utrecht, Netherlands.
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This fresh new collaboration demonstrates once again that Fisherman & Hawkins put 110% into
every project to deliver seismic results. Although when you see the name MaRLo... AND Fisherman
& Hawkins on the same billing for a collab, then you become expectant of an epic outcome.
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The pairing do not disappoint having already racked up ASOT Tune of the Week #667, confirming
its status as a heavy hitter.
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The 'Forces' on this one are strong from start to finish, with a heavy pounding bass-line, dark
spiralling melodies and haunting piano keys that take you on a ride beyond all forces imaginable.
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A collaboration truly worthy of dance-floor destroyer status and that is said when more often than
not a collaboration does not live up to its billing!

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Release date: May 30th 2014</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Long a staple of world-champion DJ Armin van Buuren, these legendary warm-up sets are revered as a great opportunity to hear one of the world’s foremost dance tastemakers applying his skills to a completely different style of record. For most artists that reach the top level of the elite, the idea of playing a warm-up set is unthinkable. Peak-hour headliners avoid the early time slots like the plague, opting instead to only play for packed houses already in full swing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, Armin has never been an ordinary DJ. Where others go left, Armin goes right, and he relishes the opportunity to connect with his fans in a completely new way. Releasing these warm-up sets was essential to forever capture the vibe of the A State of Trance 650 ‘New Horizons’ World Tour. Recorded live from Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Utrecht, Buenos Aires, and Jakarta, these mixes are the perfect chance to immerse yourself in the electric energy of a night just getting started, while tens of thousands of happy people start to fill the hall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s impossible to not connect with the purity in these mixes, and from the crowd reaction, it’s easy to understand that music is truly one of the most uniting factors in the world. All around the globe, spanning vastly different cultures and geographical climates, one constant remains: the desire to celebrate life and to enjoy exceptional music with friends and complete strangers alike.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During these sets, you can expect to hear flourishes of the classic Armin sound peaking out from deeper, darker, and more spacey records. You can hear everything from progressive to house to trance, and above all, you can feel a completely different spirit to the sound. There’s a good reason why so many people have embraced Armin as a warm-up DJ, and you’re about to relive that feeling of upcoming excitement once more.</div>

<div style="line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #464646; font-family: inherit;">Last Friday world-renowned DJ, producer and trance icon Armin van Buuren and Armada Music released the 2014 edition of the gold standard compilation series </span><a href="http://newsletter.armadamusic.nl/link.php?M=212296&N=1277&L=4136&F=H" style="color: #1155cc; font-family: inherit;" target="_blank">A State Of Trance</a><span style="color: #464646; font-family: inherit;">. The release   stormed the charts around the world, coming in at #1 in the iTunes Main Charts in Russia, the Netherlands, South Africa, Indonesia and India and reaching #1 in the iTunes Dance Charts in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey. It has also reached a Top 5 iTunes position in the US, UK, Denmark, France and Australia.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 20px;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="color: #464646; font-family: inherit; line-height: 20px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">With 35 tracks and 2 different mix styles (‘On The Beach’ and ‘In The Club’), the double-set covers a lot of territory. The compilation features several Van Buuren tunes, like ‘Eiforya’ (a collaboration with Andrew Rayel), ‘Save My Night’ (featured in cooperation with Heineken for the ‘Dance More, Drink Slow’ campaign) and the recently released, hugely influential Armin Only mainstay: ‘PING PONG’. Also included are big releases from Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery, Orjan Nilsen, Aly & Fila, Alexander Popov, Protoculture, GAIA, Alex M.O.R.P.H. and of course ‘New Horizons’, the ASOT650 anthem from Jorn van Deynhoven.</span></div>
</span><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #464646; font-family: inherit; line-height: 20px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The compilation is filled with exclusive, never-before-released material with inspiration drawn from Armin’s 2 hour weekly radio show, which has an estimated 20 million listeners, spanning 50 countries and broadcast on over 60 radio stations. The show airs globally via satellite and internet radio and is one of the most highly-regarded and influential shows in the world of dance music.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #464646; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Long a mainstay of his <strong>‘</strong><strong>ARMIN ONLY - Intense</strong><strong>’ </strong>tours, the iconic and memorable <strong>PING PONG </strong>has already been played for tens of thousands of screaming fans around the world. What began as a song exclusively meant for <strong>ARMIN</strong><strong>’</strong><strong>s</strong> live shows, quickly grew into something much larger, culminating in its release into the wild.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #464646; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Since its inception, <strong>PING PONG </strong>has already been championed by such titans as current <strong>#1 DJ of the World Hardwell, Danny Howard, David Guetta, Dash Berlin, Nicky Romero, W&W, Bingo Players, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Ferry Corsten, Style Of Eye, Ivan Gough, </strong>and many more. The song has seen extensive radio support, and <strong>Hardwell </strong>and<strong> Simon Patterson </strong>remixes will be arriving soon.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #464646; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>ARMIN </strong>crafted the song to be a decidedly <strong>lo-fi</strong> moment in a show otherwise filled with <strong>significant technical wizardry. </strong>His fascination with the classic video game <strong>PONG</strong> lead to an idea that would eventually snowball into the massive production it is today. Fans of <strong>ARMIN ONLY </strong>will forever remember the <strong>PING PONG </strong>segment of the show, with the <strong>captivating dance</strong>, hilarious <strong>yellow smiley face balloons </strong>dropping from the sky, and lighthearted atmosphere that goes along with this<strong>inescapably catchy, unassuming anthem</strong>.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #464646; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>PING PONG </strong>is also slated to make an appearance on the highly influential <strong>“</strong><strong>A State Of Trance 2014</strong><strong>”</strong>compilation, to be released March 28th, 2014. A full-blown music video will also appear shortly.</span></div>

Hardwell's Take On The Current State Of EDM

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16.5px;">Ever wondered what the Worlds number 1 and worlds number 2 DJ speak about ? Well, last week Hardwell paid Armin van Buuren a special visit at</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16.5px;"> A State of Trance 650 in Utrecht. This is what  Hardwell told Armin in a special interview, "I'm experimenting with a lot of new, different sounds. I'm a bit sick of the same formula that's going on in EDM right now so I'm just trying to change boundaries and look at what's going on in the rest of the world. Even in the hip hop scene and the trance scene and try to combine as much as possible." Interview starts at 03:49:00. Big up to Hardwell for taking the time and going to celebrate with Armin in the success of his radio show A State of Trance reaching 650 episodes.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="line-height: 16.5px;">So what do you think, do you agree with Hardwell? We completely do. It's the same sound over and over again. It seems to be the trend to producer something that sounds the same as the current hit song. We are are bored of the current sound in EDM and </span></span><span style="line-height: 16.5px;">there's</span><span style="color: #555555;"><span style="line-height: 16.5px;"> nothing more to say... </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>How are you doing today what was the last track you listened to?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well thank you, we are doing great! The last track we listened to was ''The Boxer Rebellion Diamonds'' We love that track :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>This is a staple TIE question, we know you have not yet visited our beautiful country South Africa (to play an event). What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear  South Africa?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Safari!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">Can you tell us a little about the two of you on a musical front (how did your discovery of trance music happen?)</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well back in the day we were both were singers in a boy band..........LOL just kidding.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Rob: I discovered trance music through my little brother. He was always playing trance in his room while I was listening to techno.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Isaac: I fell in love with trance  music 13 years ago. Scot Project was the man I looked up to back then!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">How best would you describe one another?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Rob: Isaac is a real  perfectionist. He always gives 110% for what he is doing, and can create great melody's!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Isaac: Rob is a real party animal. But on the other hand a real down to earth guy I also have a great appreciation for his mixing skills.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>We want to know what inspired the creation of Fisherman and Hawkins how did the two of you  meet and why the name?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We  we  met    each  other  on  our  own  organised  event.  Isaac:  I  did  ''Airwalk''  a progressive/trance concept, which is still going strong, and Rob was organising techno nights under the name ''Pulse''</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">What food would you use to describe the Fisherman and Hawkins sound and where do you draw your inspiration from. </span></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/sites/bbcgoodfood.com/files/recipe_images/recipe-image-legacy-id--1001451_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" loading="lazy" src="http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/sites/bbcgoodfood.com/files/recipe_images/recipe-image-legacy-id--1001451_6.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Chilli  con  carne  with  extra  peppers!!! We  listen to  a  lot  of  different music, trance (of course) techno, deep house, house, rock, dubstep, hardstyle. So listening to different genres of music gives us a lot inspiration, and our own creative brain of course.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">It’s  no  secret  that  Apache  is  probably  in  every  trance  fans  top  5  favourite  tracks,  it’s also  a </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">favourite by many DJ’s what was the inspiration behind the track and how did the track come to </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">be?</span></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Suddenly we  had this  melody  idea  in  our  head  after  a  night  out! We went straight to the studio the next day and worked more on it some more. By the time the track was ready we had  both  the  same  thoughts...Either  noone  will  like  this  track  (  because  of  the  bit simple/short melody ) or it will have everyone going nuts!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">It’s tough being in the Electronic Music industry, with all tracks sounding the same and </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">new producers emerging all the time, What is it that keeps you guys motivated to deliver </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">tune after tune after tune?</span></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">There is no bigger satisfaction than seeing the dancefloor going crazy to your tunes. It keeps us massively motivated!!</span><br />
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #f1c232;"><b>You guys are fairly new in the scene, what are some of the challenges you have faced </b></span><b style="color: #f1c232;">musically and career wise to get to where you are today?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">For us it was really hard to create a strong followup to ''Apache'' but i think we did a good job with the ''Virus'' E.P. on Coldharbour.</span><br />
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">Do you Guys remember the first gig you played at, what was the experience like, did you </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">love it or hate it?</span></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Hahaha, thats already more than 10 years ago for both of us. Although not together but separate from one another.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Rob: I remember I was really nervous and it was in front of 50 people!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Isaac: I do not exactly remember the first time, but guess I liked it as I am still going strong!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">There’s been a lot of talk around what makes a good DJ. In your opinion what makes a </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">good DJ and what makes a good producer? Also what’s your take on DJs using pre </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">recorded sets?</span></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To us a good DJ, is a DJ who can tell a story with his music who isn't afraid of long sets. Long sets usually means the DJ can take the audience on a journey through different styles. We're planning an extended set at the moment and we love to select all these nice tunes we were never be able to use in all these short sets :)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">Who is currently on F&H radar for artist to watch in 2014 and why?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We really like Andrew Bayer! We know he isn't particularly new, but he certainly took a new direction recently with his latest bombs. We could not forget to mention our fellow Dutchman Mark Sixma, 2013 was such a great year for him. It's obvious 2014 will go beyond that and be his big breakthrough!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>Lastly, what is the one thing your fans would be shocked to find out about each of you ?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Not that shocking but most of the people still react surprised when they hear we both have full time jobs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">Rapid Fire questions..</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>How do you see the scene in 5 years from now?</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Even more styles will be combined, you can hear it's already happening in the house scene, the melody's are coming back people ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">Not being a prisoner to your own style means….</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Don't be shy to let other people know which music you like,  for us that means......we play what we like!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">What’s the best thing about being a DJ and what’s the worst thing.</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Best thing: To entertain people with YOUR music. Worst thing has to be the long distance travels haha but at the end it's all worth it when you're behind the decks seeing everybody go nuts</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><b>Your most embarrassing moment while DJ’ing</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Hitting the wrong cue button! ;)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;">Who is the brains and who is the beauty behind Fisherman and Hawkins?</span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We think thats something for the fans to decide haha ;)</span><br />
<b><span style="color: #f1c232; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">To end on ,  please can you tell us what lies in store for Fisherman and Hawkins lovers in 2014? In </span></b><b><span style="color: #f1c232;">terms of new tracks, gigs, maybe an artist album?</span></b></span><br />
