BALANCE MUSIC

www.balancemusic.com.au

UK/EUROPE/ASIA - 1st December, 2014

NORTH AMERICA - 9TH December, 2014

Necessity is the mother of reinvention, as they don’t say.

From funky house chart smashes as Rune through anonymous techno 12-inches as Tattoorecs to his current incarnation, Rune Reilly Kölsch has never stood still for long amidst the ever-shifting electronic music landscape. Perhaps his eclecticism is not surprising, having been born in Copenhagen’s autonomous bohemian district Christianshavn to a German artist mother and an Irish singer-songwriter father. One thing’s for sure: his new direction has seen him enjoy a higher level of acclaim and fanaticism than ever before.

His bold decision to bring melody, riffs and colour back to techno - in a time when the vogue has been leaning more towards the industrial and dubbed-out once again - has paid off in a big way. Ever the visionary, KOMPAKT’s Michael Mayer signed him for the first of several releases on his Speicher imprint back in 2010, culminating in his stunning debut album 1977 last year. With everyone from Seth Troxler to Axwell playing his unmistakable epics, his appeal is uniquely broad - combining the accessibility of strong melodies with the incisiveness of boundary-pushing techno. This positioning makes for a truly riveting Balance mix.

The dazzling arpeggios of Galaxy 2 Galaxy’s Journey Of The Dragons gently begin Kölsch’s journey into the atmospheric netherworlds of electronic music. “It changed my view on what electronic music could be completely, and it’s still as beautiful as when I heard it the first time 21 years ago” he gushes. This timeless intro segues effortlessly into the yearning vocals and hazy synth breaks of John Talabot’s remix of Pional’s It’s All Over; a heady blend of past and present. Danny Daze’s immense Freeze (Frozen Mix) takes things into a darker direction with its gurgling arpeggiated acid bassline and cutting, shimmering synths building up an immersive and hypnotic wall of sound.

The spitting percussion of Henrik Schwarz’s Lockstep unexpectedly gives way to the haunting pianos and unmistakable vocals of Radiohead’s Videotape; a moment of subdued introspection and a chance for the listener to catch their breath. “I’m over the moon that we managed to license it as it’s been a huge dream of mine to include it on my mix” he says. “It’s one of my all-time classics.” Respite is brief, as the techno machinations of Dhumen’s No More tee up the slow-building rush of Kölsch’s own exclusive new track Punchbuggy. “Drawing on influences from early years, as a contrast it only seemed fitting to bring something completely new to the table. This won’t be out until my next album drops, and is a throwback to my cosmic travels through Europe in the back seat of my parents car.”

The gigantic swirling stabs of Adrian Hour’s hard-grooving Chordgresion follow on from this gargantuan exclusive. Maceo Plex’s remix of Odd Parents takes the mix to a blissful high, before Stephan Hinz & Phillipp Ruhmhardt’s Panther teases with its grinding riffs morphing in and out of focus. Kölsch’s Papageno shows his production prowess at its mind-bending finest, with Kenny Larkin’s sublimely undulating Plankton providing a mellow stepping stone for Tale Of Us & Mano Le Tough’s gigantic Caribou remix to seep in gently.

We’re brought down back into deeper territories as we edge towards a rousing climax, Kölsch’s perfectly balanced remix of Coldplay’s A Sky Full Of Stars - another exclusive for this compilation - taking the band’s unbridled euphoria into a more subtle and considered place. “It was an honor to remix them, and an honor to include the result in the mix”. Joris Voorn’s wonderfully haunting remix of Audion and Kölsch’s collaborator of old Troels Abrahamsen’s Dem Howl rounds off the mix, graceful pads and soulful vocals making for a fittingly emotive ending.

“I’ve incorporated some of my favourite records of all time in this mix, and I’m so proud that we have been able to get all these beautiful pieces of music on to one disc” he beams. “It took me a while to find the perfect tracks for the mix, as I was looking for the perfect balance of very musical records with vocals, and the more energetic tracks. I’m very happy with the outcome. I tested out the mix a few times, and for me the best way to listen to it is while traveling. In the plane or car, it really makes sense.”

Featuring several world exclusive premieres during his EDC Las Vegas set last weekend, Hardwell unveiled not just the first single (Arcadia) from his forthcoming, as yet untitled, studio album, but also his mesmerizing remix of Coldplay’s beautiful collaboration with Avicii ‘A Sky Full of Stars’.

Adding subtle touches, the Dutch megastar producer has succeeded in retaining the euphoria of the original, whilst giving the record a fresh progressive deepness, that sees it journey down a new, more club driven tone. Frontman Chris Martin’s voice is as dreamlike as ever, swelling alongside the song’s catchy pop-like melody, but the sprinkling of Hardwell’s signature sound gives the record another gear, transforming it into an anthemic masterpiece perfectly suited to the mainstage.

Personally invited by the label (FFRR/Parlophone) to remix the second single from their new album ‘Ghost Stories’, Hardwell said “I’ve long been a fan of the band so when I discovered they wanted me to remix one of the tracks from their new album, it was really a ‘wow’ moment for me. It’s such an honor and I’m really proud of the outcome of the track. When I dropped it at EDC Las Vegas, the crowd’s reaction was electrifying; it still gives me Goosebumps thinking about it!”

Albert Harvey (1986) and Kevin Ramos (1987), both grew up in the Netherlands. With their mutual passion for music a new friendship was born. Albert grew up with gospel, soul and folk music from his home country Surinam. For Kevin, music has always been a big part of his life, since his father is a well-known Latin artist and his mother a funky soul singer.

With their friendship as a solid base and their mutual interest in music, fashion and art, they decided to join forces. Albert and Kevin grew to be a strong duo with a cross-over sound between pop and electronic music, inspired by their heroes Daftpunk, N*E*R*D and Coldplay. From that moment on GLOWINTHEDARK was a fact! An identity which suits their creativity musically and performance wise, as they light up the crowd with their electrifying performances, visualizing themselves as the light and energy on stage.

our CD collection and we need to ask how many CD's do you guys have put

Depends on which
way you ask it? As deejays we have over 10 UDG Cases full of old CD’s, we did
some compilations for Dirty Dutch etc. - but hey, twothousandfourteen, just an
“in the cloud” back up and two 32gb USBs is all you need!

name GLOWINTHEDARK its reminds us of those stars and moons we had on our room

Does it? Funny,
because it reminds us of champagne showers, partyhard crowdsurfing and great
music. True, we got inspired by those as well and a lot of other stuff, plus we
see ourselves a bit as those stars and moons in the middle of a dark club or
festival!

Strange Dutch

Tell us more about who Kevin is and who
Albert is on a non-musical front, how did the two of you meet and who is the
brains and who is the beauty?

In a strange way
we’re both no brainers and you can decide from a personal point of view who is
the beauty for you. With no brainers we mean that we both have a funny and creative
side which you might need in this hectic world of music. When it comes to
serious stuff, yes, we use the other half which is quite boring sometimes. It’s
hard to describe yourself, feels awkward so we choose Albert talking about
Kevin and Kevin talking about Albert situation here.

Kevin is a great
guy heart on the right place. Girls love the smile, no heartbreaker and great
in-the-past soccer player! Met the guy on the square and beach where he used to
play ball and we had a great time back then, 13 years ago!

Albert Is the
biggest party animal that I know with the strongest drive and discipline I have
ever witnessed. Womanizer first class and loves to ride his skate board :),
Really my brother from another mother.

Albert you grew up with gospel, soul and folk
music and Kevin, music has always been a big part of your life, your father is
a well-known Latin artist and your mother a funky soul singer. How did
GLOWINTHEDARK find their place in Dance Music?

Well as music
develops, so does a human being too. Dance Music or today’s so-called EDM,
because of the wide range of genres actually comes from Jazz, which went
rougher into funk, which went into disco and ended up in house music. We just
love music, but also tear up dance floors and we try to combine as much as
possible to create this kinda vibe which is called GLOWINTHEDARK.

Your music is a fusion of different genres
dance, hip-hop, and pop, how do you find the right balance when producing and
where do you draw your inspiration from?

We find
inspiration everywhere, by seeing so many different countries, meeting people,
parties, girls etc. When we start writing a track it's automatically a piece of
us in the song, not because we want it, but it's there just because of our
background. We love rock & pop music, the easy arrangements you hear on the
radio, we always try to put a touch of that into it.

GLOWINTHEDARK co-produced “Aint A Party”
with David Guetta, we sure this played a huge part in getting GLOWINTHEDARK
noticed. We want the low down on how the collab came to be? We know you met
David during WMC.

We were really
surprised ourselves also! One day we met him on the airport and before we knew
we were sitting in his studio in Ibiza, a real big step and honour for us.

lot of your productions how did you meet Tom, and what about Tom stands out to
you guys? Is he the 3rd member of GLOWINTHEDARK?

Let’s call it
like that yea! Amazing writer and artist who we met in the UK while doing
studio stuff a while ago and who we clicked with in minutes. He moved to
Holland and is like our little brother!

there any bruised “EGOs” during the producing process?

Not at all,
we’re kinda all on the same line and we knew what we wanted to create, so with
all of that it was a peaceful studio session.

Albert - I

Fashion and music
are like a married couple to us. On stage you wanna look good, doesn’t matter
which style you choose. Our line got inspired by urban streetwear combined with
Haute Couture fashion and the music industry. We started to create and design
these bags for headphones, which are almost at the end stadium, which we think
are really cool. Handmade all-leather and all personally chosen colours and materials.
It started as the perfect model bag for a DJ where you can put your passport,
hotel card, condoms and not to forget, headphones inside.
