Joris Delacroix interview 2015

No TIE interview is complete without asking, when you hear South Africa what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

For me, South Africa is something about history and nature. I came for the first time to South Africa about 3 months ago for a gig in Cape Town. I was very excited to discover your country and the people who live there.

Can you please tell us a little more about who you are, what would we find you doing when you not making music?

These last years I've been making music almost all the time, so it's difficult to find me doing something else! But in my private life I'm just a regular French guy who likes to spend time chilling with my girl and my friends, to travel, meet new people….

You started playing the piano at 4 and at 6 you started composing music. Take us through your musical journey. Where did it start for you?

My mother put me into music school very early. My family was not composed by musicians, so one time I asked her why she did that, and she told me she just felt it, there is no other answer to it. I always wanted to compose music, even when I was a kid playing piano very badly. It was difficult for me to learn music written by others but very easy to compose new things. I think creativity has always been the most important thing to express.

How would you describe your sound?

Something mixing house, minimal techno, nu-disco, with a lot of gimmicks and melodies.

Who are some of the producers you look up to in the scene?

There are a lot! The people I feel closest to me are The Avener and Synapson, we play a lot together and our music is going in the same way.

Your production are all equally amazing, every one is unique and mind blowing in it’s own way where do you draw your inspiration from?

I try to catch a moment, an emotion and I try to concert it with music. I like when you can dance to it, so most of the time it sounds like house with a pumping beat, but it can start from something very sad or abstract….

What are some of the challenges you have faced in your career and how did you overcome them?

I had some challenges, but I think the biggest is happening now, because I have to confirm my artist state and stay on the scene after a period of "buzz" which allowed me to launch my career. I try to get over it by working a lot, always stay open-minded to new things, and working a lot again !

There has been a lot of talk nowadays about all tracks sounding the same and producers slagging of one another what makes a good record in your eyes?

I think the difference is when an artist makes music with true feelings, and not just doing this for fame.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I don't know… I hope I can still do this job, because I have the life I always dreamed about. I'll keep working hard to make this adventure as long as possible!
