Saving Ourselves with Justin Luke !

Creativity has always been secondhand for British producer Justin Luke, but it wasn’t until a few years ago when he realised music was the best way to express himself. Since then, he has been working tirelessly in the studio, audaciously conquering different forms of music and ignoring the boundaries so many in the industry have created.

Typically favoring a darker side of the sonic spectrum, Justin’s sound is big, energetic and cinematic, taking listener’s on a musical journey. With support from the likes of Thomas Gold, Marcus Schossow, EDX, Jaz Von D, Tim Mason, Tom Swoon, Roger Sanchez and Erick Morillo as well as having played at the notable Ministry of Sound and Pacha (London), Justin Luke is on an uprise with no limit in sight.

A man passionate about his music, the only approach one can take in Justin Luke’s productions is to expect the unexpected.

Hello Justin and a warm welcome to Think in Electronic, thank you for taking time out to do this interview with us.

Hey! My pleasure, thank you for your interest!

How are you doing and what whose set was your favorite from Ultra 2014? ?

I'm great thanks. I really enjoyed Steve Angello's and Alesso's. I was impressed with the track selection from Steve in his set and the energy from Alesso's was awesome.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa

The film, District 9. It may sound a little odd but I'm a bit of a movie geek and it's up there as one of my favourites!

1.Can you tell us a bit more about who Justin is on a non- musical frontand how you got into music, what attracted you to EDM?

That's quite a difficult question to answer - I'm just myself! I've aways been creative and music turned out to be my preferred output - I love the way music can change how you feel.

2.If you had to pick one places to describe your music what would it be and why?

One place? My head. Because that's where it comes from.

3.What has been the biggest challenge that you have faced in the industry and how did you overcome it to get to where you are today? Any lessons learnt you can share with upcoming DJ’s/Producers?

I think the biggest challenge for me, believe it or not; is actually declaring something finished! I'm a perfectionist and can end up spending way too long trying to improve details that only I notice. It's important to turn negatives into positives though and I always push through. The lesson I've learnt is to not give up on what you believe in - in fact that goes for everything in life.

4.What made you want to start producing tracks and do you remember the first time you sat down in studio, what was it like?

A good friend of mine introduced me to production back in school, the rest is history! I remember falling in love with the idea of designing your own sounds.

5.Who are some producer/musicians you look up to and why?

It would take a long time to list them all but right now I'm listening to a lot of SOHN, his stuff is incredible. Steve Angello is a big influence - his productions are immense. Also really into Hans Zimmer, if he's done the soundtrack to a movie I'm pretty much guaranteed to love it.

6.Your latest release “Save yourself” is a belter What inspired this track and how long did it take to produce it? And typically where do you draw your inspiration from?

Thank you! I was going for something eerie and tense and wanted to keep it quite simple musically. I believe around 4 weeks. Inspiration comes from every day life - it could be a situation, feeling, place, time, movie, character, literally anything.

7.We believe every artist has a message they are trying to portray to the world through their works. What message are you trying to send out through your music?

I'm trying to portray myself in my music, I guess you could say that's energetic and mysterious..

8.Where do you see the electronic music scene in 5 years time?

I'm not too sure to be honest, things have changed so much in the last couple of years it's hard to tell! I have no doubt it will still be striving!

9.Since it was just the IDMA’s (ha ha ) if you had to select one track of yours to be nominated for an IDMA what track would it be and why?

A track I finished recently entitled "Diamond Back", it turned out exactly how I wanted it to. Keep your ears peeled..

10. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?

I wouldn't!

11.Tell us a little more about your upcoming production, what can we expect for the rest of 2014?

I have a whole heap of unheard material lined up for release this year that I'm excited to get out! Look out for "Swarm" which will be coming out with a remix from Kid Massive in a couple of months.

12.Lastly what does Electronic Music represent for you..

Electronic Music to me represents freedom and letting go of the restraints of what most consider "everyday life". It's about making your own choices.

13.Any last messages for fans?

Big love to you all - I'm very grateful for all the support so far!

Thank you so much for doing this interview with us we hope to see you play in SA soon :)

I certainly hope so too!
