Interview || Finding Out The Facts With Audiowhores

Chatting Toolroom Knight Ibiza 2014 and No Honey With Graham from Audiowhores

Hello Graham and Adam thank you so much for doing this interview with us, its such a pleasure to be speaking to you.

audiowhores toolroom knights ibiza 2014 interview

How are you doing?

All good thanks! We just got back from a week in Ibiza, the Toolroom party at Boom was fantastic, such a great sound system!

1.    We know you guys collectively as Audiowhores, tell us more about yourselves on a non-musical front?
We’re both married and from Manchester, Adam is a fanatic Man United supporter, me personally I'm not too bothered about football! These days you’ll find me in the kitchen cooking most week days, our favourite at the moment is Gnocchi with lemon and chive pesto.

2.    We are from South Africa and we have to ask this what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa?
First thing that springs into mind musically is the deep/afro sound you guys have got going on! Artists like Black Coffee and Julian Gomes (who i heard played fantastic sets at Suncebeat Festival in Croatia) We’ve never played in South Africa yet, we’ve come close a few times so hopefully soon you’ll get to see us!

3.    As the story goes you guys met at legendary UK club ‘Out In The Sticks’, so how exactly did this meeting take place? Do you remember your first words to one another?

Adam was resident upstairs at the club, playing mainly down tempo/chill out tracks, i was a regular at the club. I was chatting to Adam saying i’ve been producing some tracks and he wanted to get into production, i told him to pop round to my house, the following Monday he was there knocking at the door keen ready to start! We made a couple of house tracks that never got released but our first release “Destiny” on white label was a great success

4.    AudioWhores was born in 2010 we are dying to know the story behind the name, it’s errrr rather interesting name..

Haha! Well after we produced our first track we made an acetate (dub plate) for Russ Marland at the club Out In The Sticks, but at the time the acetate didn't have an artist name on it. Prior to that Russ noticed that my email was at the time graham@audiowhores.com which comes from a group i made that stemmed from the term Audio Warez. Russ said why not call ourselves Audiowhores!

5.    The formation of Audiowhores was sort of like the perfect marriage with Adam having seven years of experience behind the decks and Graham having a wealth of musical knowledge and expertise. How well do you feed off one another? Do you ever get sick of one another?

We’re both pretty chilled out characters so its quite rare for us to get sick of each other. In the studio we tend to feed quite well off each other, 90% of the time I'm on the mouse/keyboard and Adam is listening from a different point of view, he gets a different feel to the overall arrangment/vibe of the track whilst I'm more concentrating on the sounds/dynamics/technical vibe of the track.

6.    No honey has been blowing up our audio system. What was the inspiration behind the track, and where do you typically draw inspiration from when producing?

The track was built around some Marvin Gaye ad-libs which i cut up, we later did the Deep Vibe mix to take it on different journey. We get inspiration from various sources, mainly being involved in the scene, listening to other DJ’s, checking out mixes on Soundcloud, reading interviews etc

7.    You guys have just mixed on of the discs on Toolroom Knights Ibiza 2014; your mix is on the deeper side, how did you decide on the track list for the compilation?

It was a combination of tracks that we’re available from the Toolroom camp and some 3rd party tracks we were feeling at the time, we also wanted to keep in the deep house / deep tech house bracet.

8.    Other than Deep house you also known for tech house and classic house, why the decision to mix the deeper disc of Toolroom Knight Ibiza 2014?

I think Toolroom already decided they wanted us to mix the first disc of the compilation as they had lined up Proc & Fitch to do to more techy disc and Rene Amesz to do the more housey mix. Of course we’re pretty versatile behind the decks and you can hear that on our dj mixes on soundcloud.com/audiowhores

9.    The mix for us is reminiscent of summer in Ibiza with its perfect blend of blissed-out Balearic beats infused with cool cuts & killer hooks. What makes summer in Ibiza so special?

Ibiza has always been quite special to us, its a melting pot of all different walks of life coming together for one thing, House music! Of course you’ll get the people who say its gone commercial and its not what it used to be like, but nothing stays the same! Ibiza will always be evolving, but in our opinion always the place to go over the summer months.

10. Do you guys remember your first visit to the while isle? What was your experience like?

My first time to Ibiza was back in 2003, i had strayed away from the island for sometime as i got images of “Ibiza Uncovered” into my head, not a good choice looking back now! haha. Of course Ibiza is nothing like that, we had a great time. Cant remember much to be honest with you, i think the highlight of the trip was wondering round Pacha and stumbling into the Funky Room! Great times

11. If we had to ask you to describe your sound using one location in Ibiza where would it be and why?

Hmmm tricky question but it would have to be Ibiza Town, care free and lots of fun!

audiowhores interview12. How has the UK house scene evolved over the years?

The UK scene went into a bit of a slump in 2005/2006 in our opinion, the whole super club bubble burst and things went underground. The scene has improved loads since then, London is where we play most these days and we always have a great time down there! Egg LDN and Rhythm Factory are our favourite clubs

13. Since you guys go by the name Audiowhores, we sure you know all about hearing damage something that isn’t stressed enough in the scene. Can you guys share with fans out there how important it is to protect their hearing while out partying?

Well both myself and Adam have tinitus, basically if you’ve ever been to a party and gone home heard a temporary ringing in your ears, this is a sign that you should be really wearing ear plugs, if this keep happening there’s a good chance you’ll have this ringing constantly in your ears, there is now way to change this!

14. You guys have had the opportunity to remix tracks from some of the best producers. Which producers do you look up to and whom do you think is the best producer out there at present?

Wow, so many great producers out at the moment, Hot Since 82, Christoph, Noir, Ninetoes, Nice7, Weiss, Kevin Knapp, Doorly, PBR Streetgang are just some of the guys we’re feeling.

15. Lastly you had to invite three people to dinner who would they be and what would be on the menu?

Pete Tong, Brian Tappert & Jamie Oliver. I’d cook something from Jamie Olivers books of course! hahaha, his veggie chilli is great

Do you have any last messages for your fans?

Thanks for the support over the past 15 years! We’re looking forward to releasing our debut album on Toolroom later this year also forthcoming in September is our first sample pack which will be available on Loopmasters, its called Audiowhores Analog Deep House Vol. 1

Thank you again for doing this interview with us we look forward to hopefully seeing you play sometime soon around the globe somewhere
