T3NBEARS || EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Growing up in the UK Tom joined the band POKERFACE/D as the guitarist in 2006, and recorded 2 EP’s and 3 singles with the band before leaving to pursue a new project with the bass player in 2008. He began his first string of shows with his new band (Cubrik) and joined shows to support bands such as Blakfish, Tubelord, Colour and Mutiny On The Bounty.

When he was 19 the desire for a career of his own started growing. He was always waiting on his band members and sound engineers to finish the music so he decided to learn producing himself.

He left university for a job as a tea boy in the London recording studio Metropolis, where he worked his way up and managed to assist on recording sessions with Will.I.Am, The Horrors, James Morrison and Example. With this experience, Tom left for a job as sound engineer and producer at a songwriting house south of London, It was here that Tom co- produced the track ‘Ain’t A Party’ of David Guetta and GLOWINTHEDARK in July 2013.

Hello Tom a very warm welcome to Think In Electronic, its is such a great honor to be doing this interview with you..

How are you doing and what’s your favorite cookie?

The Oreo is, and forever will be… The king of cookies

No TIE interview is complete without asking this what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa?

Biltong

How would your best friend describe you?

Annoying and Loud

We just have to tell you we love your “stage” name T3NBEARS, reminds us of jelly bears! We know the word T3NBEARS  comes from a British expression used for excess like “I’m hungry as ten bears” or “going hard like ten bears”. What inspired you to use the name and what does T3NBEARS mean to you?

Thank you!! I wanted a name that you can’t pigeon hole into a genre or musical style so I guess this works haha, that and I couldn’t think of anything better….

If you had to describe your musical style using 3 sweets what would they be?

Gummy bears (Naturally) Toxic waste, Gobstoppers

We all grow up with ideas of what we want to be when we older, Have you always wanted to be in music and what was it about electronic music that attracted you to EDM?

Ever since my dad taught me to play guitar I wanted to be in music! I fell into electronic music because of the “next level of extremity” that you can make, unlike in a band format.

You are a singer, songwriter, producer when can we add DJ to your list? What makes a song popular for you, the lyrics of the song or the melody?

Haha DJ will be added this summer! I really need a good lyricist to make me fall in love with a track, I hear some many great tracks with great vocals but the lyrics seem, somewhat pants and let the song down!

Where do you draw inspiration from when writing and producing? And how do you deal with moments of writer block?

I approach each song differently but normally draw inspiration from either my favourite records of the time or cartoons haha, and when I get writers block I consume vast quantities of honey, salmon and beer!

Your latest release is MUG with Danny Howard and GLOWINTHEDARK, how was it like working with Danny? And what was the most difficult part of working with 3 other guys?

Yeah it was great actually, very fast and efficient (for once haha) I think artistic and creative preferences are always difficult to balance when writing with new people so I guess that was the only
part of it that was in anyway hard.

You work a lot with GLOWINTHEDARK, What about Kevin and Albert stand out for you and do you ever have any creative clashes when it comes to producing together?

Yeah we produce everything together at the moment, it’s been an amazing six or so months so far! Kevin’s knowledge and love for music always amazes and inspires me, Albert is just a wizard and buddha in originality for our stuff. Only clashes have been lyrics and song structures so actually it’s a pretty good team right now!

If you hadn't been born in this century, when and where would you like to have lived?

When people didn’t have the internet

Besides Electronic music, what else do you enjoy listening to? Do you think your favorite music twenty years from now will be the same as it is today?

I’m always listening to the best in underground band music from the UK, there’s a huge “Math Rock” scene I used to be part of with my old outfit that’s constantly bubbling away with crazy and extreme music that always blows me away. Yes definitely, I’ll always listen to these bands, I don’t analyse this style of music just accept it and enjoy it so that will still be important to me in twenty years!

If you could invent a new instrument, what would it be and what would it sound like?

An electronic version of bagpipes accompanied with guitar pedals …… it would sound like a stampede of …. bears

Do you have any last messages for your fans? What can we expect from T3nbears in the coming months?

Only to watch this space for some solo records this year, I think (Hope) that what I bring will surprise people but then they can see what T3NBEARS is really all about!

Thank you Tom for doing this interview with us : )

My pleasure!
