The World Is Marletron's

Marletron, originally hailing from Canada and now based in London is a former member of electro-pop band, Velvet Code

Velvet Code – the band who gained support from Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton, no less – and is certainly no stranger to success within the music industry. As a DJ, producer and artist in his own right, comparisons to the likes of Calvin Harris are inevitable, but where Marletron differs is his fresh approach to a scene that arguable needs a serious injection of originality.

Blending progressive house, electro and the impeccable vocals of Marletron himself, ‘World Is Yours’ brings Marletron to the fore with an impressively catchy electro hook that will be the peak-time weapon in plenty of festival sets this summer. With a huge remix package on the horizon and several key live dates in the coming months, expect Marletron and ‘World Is Yours’ to be a serious one to watch for the remainder of 2014.

Hello Marletron, Thank so much for taking time out to do this interview with us. Its such a huge pleasure : )

How are you doing today where was the last place that you visited?
I was in Barcelona recently for the Primavera Music Festival because I heard there was going to be an influx if dance music there this year. Hopefully next year I’ll be making noise on the waterfront myself :)

1.     To start of can you tell us a little about yourself who you are and what does a typical day in your life look like.
Well, on most days I’m like a kid who just wants to play with his toys. In my case, either my music production toys like Logic, Ableton, NI, Izotope, or my Pioneer toys for Djing. I usually get inspired in the morning after a hard training session at the gym. Right now, I’m preparing for the late summer/fall promotional tour I’m setting up, so I’m going hard 5 days a week, and I’ve got a trainer who doesn’t take my lazy crap!

2.     We are from South Africa, and we ask everyone this what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa?
My friend Antonio, and his personality. Likeable, fun loving, but also a kid at heart. Too bad he doesn’t return phone calls or emails. Is that something that’s common with South Africans?! ;)

3.     You are from Canada and now live in London, why the move across continents?
I wanted to be in the region where a lot of dance music has been created. Some of my favourite artists/DJs are from here: Nicky Romero, Avicii, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta. However, it looks like the shift to America is happening fast, so I expect to relocate to Los Angeles soon. For music, yes, but also because I can’t stand not being able to watch hockey at a normal hour. I’m a huge Los Angeles Kings fanatic after all.

4.     You were part of the electro pop band Velvet Code and you gained support from Paris Hilton and Perez Hilton, what made you pick the path to going solo?
Velvet Code was a phase that I was going through, just like everyone goes through them, but to be honest, it wasn’t me. I was tired of pretending to be sad about life, and “woe is me”-ing. I wanted to show that I’m hopeful. That’s what Marletron is, simply, hopeful.

5.     It’s becoming more common to hear of males singing on EDM tracks. Do you remember the moment when you realized you were absolutely talented at singing? Can you recall what the first song was that you sang live?
Oh boy, I don’t think I’ve ever had that moment, even today. I still think I’m just an ok singer, but I do remember doing Karaoke my first time to Robbie Williams’ “Feel”.

6.     What three cites would you use to describe your music and your singing style and why?
Three cities: Barcelona: Because the sun is always out and the positive energy is in the air. At night people can get wild, and that’s ok. I guess most people would say Ibiza, but that’s too easy :)
Los Angeles: That’s where I think dreams are built into reality.
Montreal: Because I’m Canadian, I have to list my favourite Canadian city: Montreal. They are always vibrant and full of energy in Montreal. The party never stops.

7.     Do you ever go through periods where you suffer from writers block and how do you deal with it? Any crazy routines to get the creative juices flowing?
I do, haha. It can be frustrating, but I never force it. I do little things, like change my environment, exercise to get my blood pumping, go out and dance, so that I take it off my mind. And then “TADA” there it is.

8.     At what point in your life did you become aware to the fact that you had a real talent for song writing, and where do you draw inspiration from ?
I had a moment when I was dancing at a club in Toronto when I was about 19, and a melody was running through my head. “I’ll follow you, if you follow me” was the lyric. I ran with it. I think there are like 10 versions of that song now, but I’m going to fold it into this project as an upcoming track. It’s only fair that I share the early days with my fans today, so they know that we can all be hopeful, no matter what the situation.

9.     Your recent release is World is Yours it’s undeniably gorgeous, what inspired the track?
There was a huge street party happening in Soho London in the fall, and part of me was like, go out and party with your friends. But again I heard a melody in my head, and I ran with it. The fact that I was in my studio, with the sun blaring in the window (which is rare in London), helped me realize who I was: a teenage dreamer. That song shaped this project, and it’s the theme of my life right now. You are as young as you feel. Period.

10.  The remix pack to World is Yours is set for release with massive remixes from Futuristic Polar Bears and more how did you decide on who to select to remix the track?
I wanted to hear different interpretations of what “World Is Yours” sounded like to other remixers/producers, so I contacted my friend Matt Waterhouse. He immediately took a shine to the song, and made a few suggestions. I’m so thankful for the entire team’s inspiration: Futuristic Polar Bears, Nathan C, Morlando, Magnus Black, Signature, Mister Bristow and Orru. They all did an amazing job, and I’m super excited now that they’re out there.

11.  You write most of your lyrics would you find it hard to sing someone else’s lyrics as opposed to singing your own lyrics?
I wouldn’t say I’d find it hard, and I’m totally open to it. I think the music industry is about collaborating with great people, and if a great producer came to me with a song he wanted me to sing, I would absolutely look at it.

12.  You an EDM triple threat DJ, Producer and singer/songwiter, somewhat like Calvin Harris. How do you balance all 3 aspects and how did you get skilled in all 3?
I have to say, it’s no easy task. And as I get more DJ toys, it’s becoming more complex, but I want to create an incredible experience for the audience. I usually have a general idea of what I want to create, but I generally feed off the audience and their energy. Think of a Daft Punk show, and how it’s built, and that’s what I’m trying to aspire to.

13.  All you know is that we are two ladies, crazy about fashion and music and love the good things in life. The brief is to write a song for us what would the lyrics be, who would you chose to produce the track and how would it sound?
Well, I think one of you would have to do a rap and I would produce it. Actually, now that I think about it, maybe the two of you want to do a guest vocal on my upcoming tracks? Can you two sing? :) Send me an audio clip!

14.  Who are some of your musical hero’s and how have they influenced you and your music?
Frankie Knuckles was/is still a DJ inspiration. The Godfather of House. I’m also inspired by artists like Freddie Mercury for his vocal range, songwriting and stage presence. And Daft Punk. A true example of staying true to who you are, and doing what you love.

15.  When can we expect the colab with Paris Hilton? Haha kidding What can we expect from you in the coming months? And do you have any last messages for your fans?
I didn’t even know I had Paris Hilton’s support. Is she spinning my tracks? J The second single is going to drop in July, and then the third single in August. I’m also working on a Pink Floyd cover…more on that soon! I’m going to put out a lot of tracks over the next 6 months. 10, maybe 15 in total. I want to keep things brewing in my new studio now that I’ve got the space set up nicely.

Rapid Fire.
1. Dream female vocalist to duet with ? Pink (P!nk)
2. Dream producer to work with? Pharrell
3. Favourite poets and authors? Stephen King, Sir Walter Raleigh

Thank you so much for doing this interview with us we look forward to what you have lined up in, in the upcoming months. We hope to catch you live soon…

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I hope to meet you guys, and send me a vocal! :P
