Time to Jam with Prok and Fitch

Interview || Toolroom Records Prok and Fitch Chat To Us

Hello Ben and James a very warm welcome to Think In Electronic, its is such a great honor to be doing this interview with you

1.    How are you doing and what was the highlight of the last gig you played at?
Hi Layla and Yasmin hope your both well, its been a while. Were very well thanks, the last gig we played at was a small fundraising event for an extremely worthy Children’s charity called Oscar, they make a huge difference to underprivileged kids living in the slums of Mumbai. The highlight 100% was being able to walk home after the party, no flights, taxi’s etc etc, Beauty!!

2.    No TIE interview is complete without asking this what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear South Africa?
Safari! Obvious looking forward to finally doing it one day..
3.    We actually seen you guys play 2 years ago when you came to South Africa how has life changed since then?
Yep we remember well, unfortunately we haven’t yet had the opportunity to come back again, hopefully some point next year. Workwise It’s much the same were still very busy working hard in the Studio, and touring as much as our other halves will let us:)

4.    How would your Ben describe James and how would James describe Ben ?
James is extremely technical & has a really good ear for detail, whilst Ben is great at pushing the boundaries and being experimental, but consistent, his risk taking always pay off!

 5.    We all grow up with ideas of what we want to be when we older, Have you guys always wanted to be a DJ/ Producer and what was it about electronic music that attracted Prok and Fitch to EDM?
We both got hooked into the music Industry in our mid teens, and trough the same way going out getting stuck in & partying, in the 90’s House Music was booming in the UK we were lucky enough to be a part of it. Introduced and Inspired by the likes of Carl Cox & Jeremy Healy.

6.    Toolroom Records is 10 years old, what were Ben and James doing 10 years ago and did you think you would be where you are today?
That was a long time ago, both young & innocent in our 20’s
James had just moved back to Brighton after a 3 year spell of DJ’ing in Valencia, and started playing @ the Legendary Zap.
Ben finished University, and the day after headed to Ibiza for the season as the resident for Plastic Fantastic .

7.    Toolroom is one of the most well known labels in the industry how did it come about for Prok and Fitch to have mixed Toolroom Knights compilation? How does it make you guys feel?
They certainly are and lead the way for musical style, so naturally we’re very happy to be working so close to them. Our long term aim when initially signing our first track to Toolroom, was to eventually release our own Knights Album with them, so its something we’ve been working towards for years and we feel very proud to have finally achieved it.

8.    Mixing a compilation album is no easy task. We are bombarded with fantastic music daily so how did you gentlemen go about selecting the track list?
You’re right there’s so much Music out there, you have to search harder now more than ever to find great new music that stands out from the rest.

We worked on the Album on and off for over 2 months, including writing all the exclusives, compiling & mixing, initially we started with 50 plus tracks on the wish list, and whittled it down from there, was really important to us this the DJ mix flowed and was a true reflection of our sound.

9.    Is there a specific message Prok and Fitch were trying to convey with your chosen track selection of Toolroom Knights
I guess we wanted the track selection to reflect our sound & demonstrate were we are musically at the moment., from the slightly deeper groovy tracks like Alvaro Smart - Rolling Hearts through to the more pumping stuff we play like the Tom Staar remix of Paper Aeroplane. This coupled with the diversity of our productions on the compilation, were very happy with the final result.

10. Favorite track of Toolroom Knights compilation?
Oooh tough question, there’s a lot of tracks on there, on the self-indulgent side, but would have to be, either Get It On or Dope Drop.

11. Do you have a favorite set of clothes you like to DJ in or a lucky charm you take along?
Yeah we both feel very comfortable wearing our lucky thongs, James in a leather one and Ben is partial to Leopard print ;) other than that no lucky charms

12. What flavor Ice Cream describes Prok and Fitch and Prok and Fitch’s sound and why?
Would say Pistachio, we don’t particularly like the flavor, but It’s pretty  timeless & refined, something we strive for in our productions..

13. If we switched places and we were the artists and you were asking the questions, what is one question you would ask us? Why ?
Here you go.
To many people  think you have the dream job, extremely fortunate to travel the world, party, entertain people, experience a wide variety of culture’s and cuisines. Obvious perks aside what’s it really like?
And why..
Be great reading to see the other side.

14. Do you have any last messages for your fans
Certainly is, the most important people. A massive thanks to everyone that listens to our music & comes to party with us in the Clubs & Festival’s, you’re the reason we do what we do, and without you there would be no inspiration.

Thank you Ben and James for doing this interview with us : ) we are really looking forward to seeing you play in South Africa again some time soon.
